I have a 40 gallon breeder that has a good amount of rockwork and good filtration, the current stock list is 2 yellow labs, one red zebra, on kenyi (he is very sweet and not agressive), and a albino lab. They are all about a inch or so, one of the labs is a little bit bigger, since he is dominant in the tank he has grown faster. I was wondering if it would be much of a problem adding another mbuna, i was thinking yellowtail acei or another more peaceful kind, but not another of one i currently have, will i run into problems a year so so from now? earlier, later?

Get a test kit and let your water tell you if you can add more.I usually know when i have too many fish in my tank when i do two water changes a week and cant keep my nitrates under 40ppm,lol.Ive thinned the heard a time or two in my years but what can i say i like fish.

I would add a couple more if it was mine. But nothing that gets bigger than 5 inches or so.

I think ur ok to add 2 more that is if ur of with doing a lil bit bigger water change In my experiences I had 5 four inchers in my thirty and I set up another tank to give them more room and now the three are freakin aweful mouthfighting on a daily circling nipping chasing all the good stuff and I'm bout to move one back but I also keep heavily planted/rocky aquariums to let down on agression because my apt manager sucks and won't let me have a bigger one says I'm 10gs over already but I really think u would be maybe better off by an extra two so no one focuses just on the same fish works for me I would try it and if not ask the petstore if it don't work if they take returns good luck

Tank length seems to be a huge factor in the overall climate of an african tank's aggression. I noticed a huge difference transferring my 2.5-3.5 inch africans from a 30 gallon to a 55. What size are your fish right now? Also, be sure to keep a close eye on your kenyi, and for damage to other fish. Both of the kenyis that I owned were, for lack of a better word, psychotic.

My tank is 36x18x16. They are all between 1-1.5". There really isnt much fighting going on in the tank, if there is its usually the 2 yellow labs. So i might look around and pick another up. Ive had them for about 4 months or so and im pretty surprised my kenyi is probably one of the least aggressive. No one really messes with him and he doesnt really mess with anyone

In my 30+ years of keeping african cichlids, I think you should put 10 more in. If you have alot of rock work you will have less aggression with more fish. Just stick with the Mbuna.
