I've made a 2 gal. critter cage into a small fry/fuge that is hooked up to my sump. I was wanting to raise snails in it since i am working on getting a Nano for my fish fry and would like snails for my loaches. I'm posting pics. of what it looks like. Basically a pump in the return side of my sump and goes to the critter cage. It then overflows into the inlet side of my sump. There is enough room to replace the criter cage w/ a 5gal.since it was really only a proto. to see if I could syphon off fry and not set-up another tank w/heater and other equipment etc.

This is the return side of the sump. A Rio 600 is attached to the gray rigid pipe.

This is the tank itself. I cut a hole in the lid and feed the clear hose into. The return back to the sump is gravity feed. A 1/2" bulhead and spa hose.

Works great.

Is it big enough to raise snails. Probably ramshorn.

For food...

Was thinking of just dropping different veggies in there, maybe some pellets from time to time or algae waffers.

Is the 2 gal. OK, or shold I get a 5.5?

Thanks,

Yea, i've bred MTS in a pint peanut jar. Flake gets messy, I prefer slices of cucumber or sinking algae wafers would be the best. Also, be wary that snails will get into places you don't want them to. They will find a way through your piping into your main tank and breed in your substrate (at least in the case with MTS), possibly ending up in your filter and clogging the pipes if they become too numerous. Just a warning.

I think I'm going to use Ramshorns. I can get them locally.

i find pouch snails breed the best IMO. might wanna try them*have the worst luck with ramshorns but that could be because my assassins targeted them the most)

Pouch Snails?

I was hoping the Ramshorn will be OK in the fuge since they will be alone, free of any competion

the bigger the tank the better but that would work. Are you putting a strainer over the outflow to keep the adults in?
