Can I follow these steps?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the aquariacentral one will be stronger. The reason I believe this is because on the mfk one, the weight is resting on the screws attaching the legs. On the ac one, the weight is being transfered to the legs. I hope this makes sense.

You could do it either way. Anything 55 gallons or smaller, it (mfk thread) probably wouldn't make a difference. Bigger than that and I would go with the other (ac) design.

thanks
it's a 40gallon breeder.
so both designs are gonna be able to hold 400lbs of weight?(the guy who made the AC one said anyone who follows his steps is foolish..)

also what kind of screws and nails should I use to attach everything together?

The MFK version sends the wieght from the tank to the legs which sit directly on the floor. In reality BOTH stands are very over built. You could build the whole thing out of plywood and attain the same end result. IF you are going to do the 2x4 stand just use 1.5-2" wood screws. If needed you can sink the screw by drilling a hole for the head of the screw to go into but don't go any deeper then half way pending on how thick (2" side or 4") your screwing into. I have built a stand this way for a 55 and it works fine. Wood is much stronger then most will give it credit for.

The good doctor is correct. Either design will work for what you want. I would differ from his advice in one way- use 2 1/2" wood screws. It will give you a lot more bite. A 2" screw will only go into the second 2x4 1/2", and that is only if you sink it all the way (a 2x4 is really 1 1/2" thick).

I have also built a stand for my friend's mom just like the mfk thread for a 55 gallon and it's still going strong. All my stands end up rediculously overbuilt, lol. Have you ever taken a look inside the stands that sell for hundreds of dollars at places like Petsmart? They seem terribly flimsy, but I never see any "My P.O.S. Petsmart stand imploded!" threads.:D
