will probably be buying this filter does anyone know about it? its for my reef tank. CPR Wet/Dry Reef Filter
will be used on a 55 gallon.

Any more info? Size? Pics?

Wet/dry are very effecient filters which is a good thing. But they produce a lot of nitrarates that corals are more sensitive to and some saltwater fish also.

On a reef sump usually the first chamber has a Protine skimmer (as best of as you can afford) this is the main form of filtation, it pulls out organic wastes so they do not get a chance to turn into ammonia/nitrites/nitrates.

In the tank Live Rock is used which has bacteria on it that performes the nitrogen cycle to take care of ammoina in the tank, also some can be in the sump but in the tank is where you attach corals and what not. This rock is very porouse and will have some anerobic bacteria deep inside that denitrafies some what.

There are other things like refuguims and deep sand beds, along with all sorts of other equiment on the high end of things, phospate and calicium reactors.

If you want a full reef with fish and corals and invertabrates i would check out the saltwater section of some forums or even all saltwater fourms. There is a lot of new/changing stuff with filtration.

This^ +1. I remeber a friend of mines telling me the same thing when i asked why sump instead of wet/dry.

so if i get it for like 70 bucks would it be worth it to make it a sump its big enough and has an overflow hob box

Never used one but if you pulled out the bio media and put a Protine Skimmer in there i don't see why it wouldn't work. Each skimmer needs to be in a certain depth of water, if it's too deep you could put it on a platform in the sump making sure you can still clean the cup. Also all skimmers need a stable water level which just means a baffel.
