The store has it labeled as a barracuda but that is too general of a term. It reminds me of a brycon that I use to have but with more color

its not a Golden dorado, but does look similar, may be closely related i dont know.... my LFS had them and called them a "pike", but thats a rather broad term.... i'd be interested to know what the name of this fish is as well... i was also told they are rather aggressive, which of course got me more interested! lol

Sabalo pike or false golden dorado. Get about a foot long and play nice for the most part unlike true dorado.

Looks to me like Brycon alburnus. They grow around a foot long. Much smaller than the golden dorado, but very similar in appearance, especially when young like this. Here's the fishbase page for it: http://www.fishbase.us/summary/Brycon-alburnus.html. Hope this helps! Very cool fish! What was the price? I've seen them at LFS usually for around $100.

100 bucks was the asking price. The store also had an armatus I have my eye on. Do you thong the two would get along?

I feel its probably Brycon dentex.

It would probably play nice with the armatus till the army was big enough to decide to eat him.

No its not a dentex because that's the Brycon I had before and this is a different fish. The pic doesn't show it but this fish has a real nice golden color and a vivid red tail. My dentex was all silver and had a dull red tint to its tail

ok so i googled some pictures of both the dentex and the alburnus and looked for subtle differences between the two species. the things i noticed to most consistent were the length/shape of the black mark on the tail (the alburnus was longer and while the dentex was more like a sideways teardrop) the headshape (alburnas was more a uniform curved slant while the dentex looked like it had a corner to it) and third the anal fin (the alburnas had a stronger curve and the fin came to a point at the bottom while the dentex was a slower curve and a rounded bottom)

based on these distinctions I am led to believe that the fish in the picture i posted is indeed Brycon Alburnus.

Does anybody know of any difference between these fish behavioral or growth wise? Besides those subtle differences in appearance they seem like the same fish. Almost like it is the same fish just from a different region.
