proud to present you with the *official* id...

drumroll...

you have a western rattlesnake, it is not a diamondback (note the striped, not diamonds all the way down) it is not a prairie ( once again note the patterns)

here are all pit vipers (such as rattlers) found in the us

which rattle snake species causes nucrosis(sp?)

i remeber on one episode of the croc hunter he caught a rattle snake in the US, said that if you where bitten by this particular snake the wound would basically rot.

Several in the southern US through SA have necrotic plus hemolytic venom. I tyhink the one Steve Irwin was playing with was a Mojave.
I agree that the one FOD caught is one of the several sub-species of the western rattle snake, this one is (I think) the Southern Pacific Western Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis helleri) here is a pic of a young one caught near San Diego from the www.snakeguys.com site.
Don't get bit, the vemon causes extreme tissue damage and swelling, check this site for views of bites http://images.google.com/imgres?img...talus+viridis+helleri&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&sa=N
