I really want to put my dats back into my 240. How big should my bass be, to be safe from my dats? My bass are about 2.5 in and my dats about .5 in longer but due to the difference in body shape Im not sure if it will be ok. There are 3 dats and 8 bass is there safety in numbers. I can't see the dats being able to swallow my bass, but will they try? Any suggestions. I would wait but I need my smaller tank for other fish.

Id be more afraid of ur bass swallowing the dats

Dats have tiny mouths, they won't be able to swallow a peacock bass .5 inches smaller.

I have no experience with dats. But I see the growth rate being the bigger issue. You can't find a small tank on Craig's list? Eventually you will have a problem. If I am correct you have to fish on the oppisite sides of the growth chart. P's grow very fast Dat's very slow. I would try to find another holding tank.

Hmm. I actually as of now have my bass with convicts the same length as the bass and am not having issues yet due to body shape. Im not worried about losing the victs because they were just fillers til I got my bass. My dats equal about 3 of my bass and are actually growing quite fast. Just worried about the bass because the dats a month ago bit a rosie in half that was just a little smaller in size difference when you compare the bass to it.

well which one is more expensive ? lol... if ur dats are ST that cost abomb ;p maybe u should just put it in .. doesnt matter since pb are not that expensive... if ur pb is more expensive coz that dat is normal breed... and worred .. stop feeding dat.. and feed more to pB ... :P

ive raised my bass and dats together in the same tank since my ITs were .5 in and my ocells were 2in in a 60 gallon tank. now that they are in my 135 the bass are a good 6-8 inches while my dats are only 1.5 to 2inches and there doing fine. but i mean it doesnt always happen the same way

i know its not a permanent fix but you could buy/make an aquarium divider just to be safe until you figure out what the plan is gonna be so you dont have to worry about your datnoids becoming expensive feeder fish and free up the smaller tank

i doubt the dat will try to eat the bass because it physically can't as its mouth is not big enough. but the pbass will outgrow it very soon then i'll start worrying about the dat ,but due to body shape, i dont think you'll have a problem until there is at least a 5" difference, but if it does become that way, i'd be worrying above both as the pbass will try to eat the dat AND the pbass will probably choke on it due to dats body shape ._.

dunno, thats why i keep 20" pbass with 20" dat, no problem with that xD
