has anyone done this? i'm moving to nc where the avg winter is 41 degrees. finished garage, 180 tank. maybe i could get 2 heaters or something, wanting to keep freshwater rays again.

finished garage with a couple large heaters would work perfect....

you will fight the cold big time... I once had a pond in mine.. And The pond was heated with a ton of heaters... just got old. if your going to do it.. Id say get a acrylic tank. As the hold heat better. you will prolly need atleast 1000watts i bet

if the garage is finished and insulated then it shouldn't be that big of a deal... glass tank with tops will hold heat pretty well... also just up the heaters I would run 4 250watts stealths in the tank...

I think it would be better to find a way to heat the garage.
You'll need really powerful heaters or and multiple ones to heat those temps. Which seems like a big waste to me.

Not sure 1k would work for a 180 gal in those temps. At my parents house, temps vary between 50- 60 F.

I've have two 300 watts heaters in my acrylic 150 gal at 4 per gal and it''ll heat up to around 70 F.
When I have third 200 watt heater in there which I am currently using my glass 55 gal and the room temps go to up 60F...then it heats fine.

So I guess in conclusion...five watts per gal in an acrylic tank works in 60 F. I think you'll need more.

I have 1000 gals stingray pound in the garage with 1500w heater for 2 years now,and 400 gals reef tank with 300w heater for 4 years. You want to make sure the door and windows are seal up good. I still use small heater set to 75 just in case. I'm in MD. Winter I set at 89 for rays and 80 for reef. Make sure the ceiling has insulator. I will not recom you to buy Aqua Medic heater it killed my P14 last month. Just my experienced.Hope it help you a little

all mine are in a garage... what kinda question is that, lol, of course you can... :grinno: ;)

You can keep whatever you want wherever you want. As long as you can maintain temperature.

As mentioned you can keep a ray aquarium in the garage as long as the temperature can be consistent. I would try to heat garage.

I re-finished my garage for my 375g.. It is 1" acrylic, and I run a single 250w heater in the overflow box.. It stays around 80-82 year round.

My de-humidifier produces heat and I also have a tiny fan with heat coils and a temperature gauage.. I keep the room around 85-90..
