I have a black male 2.5 incher in said tank. 40% weekly WCs. If tank is too small, what min. tank size do you recommend? No plans for a tankmate, we instantly connected at the lfs that's why I bought him. Cool fish with personality.

for a male (actually even for a female I think bigger would be better), no I would put him in a larger tank. A 29 would probably be ok so long as you keep up with the water changes as he grows to adulthood.

I would suggest you get a 29 minimum... Some males get rather large and bulky i could not even see a full grown female living in a 15

Ok thanks. I might as well get a 55 not much difference in price.

Min tank size I would suggest would be a 20 long, having said that bigger is better a 55 would be great and provide a very comfortable exsistance for the life of your fish.

yeah 20 long until they're half grown. but that takes years. if you have one convict chances are you might want more cichlids in a few years : )
cons like friendly company though, they're pretty much swarm animals when yonger, but they're happy in tanks as pairs.
I personally think its sad to see a male cleaning a rock or digging a pit all day, being a single male myslef. I'd get him a few girlfriends, let him choose one, and then give the others away. But of course they are convicts, so you'll have to plan ahead to have something to do with the thousands of babies they will start having right away. The best thing to do with them in my opinion is to find someone with a bigger non-cichlid fish that will eat them. I have a clown knife for this. Convicts are so prolific you'll never be able to find homes for all the babies they produce.
