I want to add a male JD after I am realizing I got a female. I DO NOT want to deal with babies. Can I prevent this? I don't want to hurt them in any way.

If they want to breed they will, you can only stop the process by separating them. But in many cases if you have other fish in the tank, either the others will eat the babies, or, to keep other fish from eating their young, they will eat them themselves.
But just because you put 2 of the opposite sex in a tank, doesn't mean they will become a compatible pair. With 2 there is only a 50% chance they won't kill each other.

I agree. They could fight a lot making it impossible to house the male and female without a divider. Or if they become a pair you can just remove the eggs after they lay them. Problem solved.

You can change their environment to reduce the odds of them spawning. Lower temps are a given when you don't want doghouse to spawn, they also reduce aggression.

Can you feed them some wedding cake? That seems to put a stop to it!
Sorry I had to do it
