Well was thinking to get a puffer, and I heard they prefer high ph, but they are adaptable to other ph's. So was wondering could a green spotted puffer live with Malawi cichlids (I.e. yellow labs, blue zebras, etc.) ?
Or would they be alright with American cichlids?

I haven't got the fish yet, it's just a thought.

Thanks guys

No, green spotted puffers as almost all puffers are species only. Also the are brackish and need to be full marine when adults. You could have a community of South American Puffers, but they will nip other species as well.

Colomesus asellus may be your best bet. They can tolerate pH up to about 7.8 and are true FW puffers. You can even keep a group together since it's been reported that these puffers school in the wild. Keep plenty of snails and dwarf crayfish to offer them to aid in keeping their teeth shaved down. Spotted and figure 8 puffers require increased salinity levels up to marine as adults. These will likely harass your other fish.

Problem with the true freshwater puffers is they dont get very big...3-4" tops. Most African cichlids get bigger than that and are way more aggressive. An African however, is no match for a puffer in a lip lock!
