Can I put the whole filter in the dishwasher or will that ruin the electrical components?
PS I know about not using detergent and how this will kill all the good bacteria

Troll?

Why would you even want to do that, if it's covered in crap; give it some elbow grease and keep water away from the plug at all times

The dishwasher alone will kill your bacteria. Detergent will kill your fish and yes it would ruin your pump.

Sorry but you shouldn't never wash or rinse your filter with any water, beside the water from the fish tank itself...this way you wont keep the bacteria from the filter. when you do water change and pump out the water from the tank, us that water.

Do people read anymore? It clearly says engraved on the HOB filter "DO NOT SUBMERGE IN WATER, MOVING PARTS, RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK"

If you have a media sponge or other Natural bacteria surface, and you really want to give your filters a good cleaning which is actually good for the moving parts that CAN GET WET, remove the cartridge, media and/or carbon elements, and take a toothbrush to the entire INSIDE of unit, the intakes, intake covers, turbines, etc can all be removed and scrubbed w/ a toothbrush or Pipe-cleaner to allow better flow.

For the longer tubes on canisters, a straightened metal coat-hanger covered with a 3-4ft length of nylon legging secured by a series of rubberbands is perfect for this job.

NEVER use any household detergents on aquariums accessories or tanks since they will leave a residue that is toxic and absorbed by the fish. Instead, unscented bleach can be used prior to filling a tank for sterilizing purposes, followed by a 5 minute+ rinse and 24 hours+ to air dry, as the bleach will leave no residue and remaining odors will evaporate.

White vinegar can be used to take care of hard-water stains and calcium build-up

In all fairness this is when the HOB is plugged in and running. I don't think it would be plugged in while in the dishwasher.

Yeah some mega trolls in this thread! I would be worried about soap scum as mentioned, but if you run the washer without detergent for a couple of cycles and don't use detergent on the filter then perhaps it could work...

I think that a lot of people here think you're gonna wash the cord, motor, and filter media. If you have a filter where you can remove all of those things and just wash the housing (e.g. AquaClear or Aqueon) then it might be ok. Definitely test it on a feeder fish tank or something before doing it to your prized fish.

For some reason I find this idea intriguing. Probably cuz I'm lazy lol.

Edit: I would put it on the top rack only.
