I have an FX5 and I want to put more sponges for mechanical filtration. Right now, all three trays of my FX5 are loaded with biomax. Can I put a sponge right on top of each tray for better mechanical filtration? Or is it better to just put it on the top tray?

I'm not an FX5 expert, but I'd put all my mechanical filtration in the first location after the intake. The idea is to strain the water first, then treat it; this way you aren't getting a bunch of solids in areas of your filter that you don't need to.

Put it all on top so the cleanest water is getting to your bio media. Also, they will clog, so putting them on top you can stack a few, and remove them one at a time as they clog, and it's easier to access.

In the fx5 I found it best to use the blue pad on the top tray with bio media underneath it and bio media in every other tray.

If you put pads or wool in more than 1 tray, ensure the mechancal filtration media is of a finer micron than your first mechanical media in the top tray. Doing it this way will have finer filtration, but you will be up for more regular maintenance.
