like the tittle says can turn my old RO unit in to a HMA filter , im planing on starting a discus tank . from what i can see a HMA filter is basically an RO unit without the expensive 1 micron cartridge , my unit takes a 5 micron pre filter and then a carbon block. anybody with any experience ?

It should be possible, depending on your make filter and how it's all put together.
There should be the pods with the prefilters and then the pod with the RO membrane.
The water passes through the prefilters and then into the RO section. So if you are able to put a switch/tap at the point where the water leaves the prefilters, but before it enters the RO pod, you should be able to produce both.

yer i see what you mean , so that is basically what a HMA filter is -- an RO unit with out the membrane ?

Yes. The prefilters take out the metals, chlorine, chloromine and some organics.
The RO membrane is where the carbonates and a few other things gets removed.

So if you just HMA your water, it will get rid of a lot of the nasties, but not the carbonates, so the KH and PH won't be changed.
