Can i use a cheap pool pump for my wet dry?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just answered this in the diy forum for someone else. It is not recomended because they are not ment for constant use so will not last very long, are very loud, and kick off lots of heat.

Chances are it isn't made to deal with a high head application. Try pumping water through it, and keep raising your output hose to see how much flow you get when the head pressure rises.

Yea the pool pump is a bad idea, i want one that is quiet and cheap to run. leaninng more toward a couple power heads i have sitting around doing nothing.

heres the plan, make the background out of styrophome, with a nice overhang, the over hand will disguise my bio filter, i can use a large piece of pvc pipe, cut some of the top off fill it with bio balls and use the power heads to have two exits for flow, one larger hole on the opposite end for water entrance.

its hard to put into words, but i can see it working in my head and on paper, can anyone see problems with this?

i dont want a sump, i have to have the tank self contained, the room the tank is going in is our parlor, its very rustic, has antiques in it, gorgeous hard wood floors with inlaid design oringinall in the house from 1910, if anything happens to this room my wife will have my butt, so the filter must be self contained, im afraid of overfilling the sump and also syphone effect it power outage.

any advice greatly appreciated, contructive critisizm accepted with a smile, and kicking the wife out is not an option.

thanks

Sounds good. I am even OK with the dog skull.

But just out of curiosity: What's the wife for?

Heh, your the first one to mention the dog skull! Not sure what else it could be, theres this trapper, taxidermist guy that dumps dead stuff by a lake by my house, he just throws them in the ditch and lets them roll to the lake. Im not sure if its a dog skull actually, but not sure what else it could be...timberwolf, cyote, werewolf, who the heck knows. i should take that off there or peeps will think im nuts, just stuff i thought would look cool in a piranah tank, only one thing wife hates more than big aquariums, its big aquariums with a dog skull in it.

best part of marriage is kids..they make my day every day..two boys that love being outside, playing video games, americas funniest home videos and watchin fish eat other fish.

Have cichlids for a while, then i buy piranahs and let them eat my ciclids, then my piranahs die, so i buy more cichlids, then i get sick of cichlids so i buy piranah again, and yea they eventually eat the cichlids, been doing this stupid cyle since the late 80's. not sure why...
Ask a shrink! It could be the reason your wife never took to fish-keeping.

I had an Irish gf, who eventually went home to dear old Dublin. When she was here she used to say "You have too many fish tanks!"
Guess what? I just got of the phone with her. She is setting up a tank in dear old Dublin!

Your seem to be entertaining a number of morbid hobbys, but keeping a wife is the weirdest IMO. I can realate to breeding and keeping human offspring but only at a certain age/size. Under 30" they are too messy and once they reach 4' they need too much space.

Happy New Year!
