recently my redic rays had 2 pups. i know the best thing to do is remove them from the main tank(300g) and add them to a smaller tank mainly to make sure they are eating.

i really dont have room for another tank in my house, so i figured the best thing to do is add a sump for place to keep my baby rays. im sure they will have more.

i was thinking of using a 55g tank. the question is do i have to make a bubble trap or can it just be an open tank. im not using it for filtration in any way. i just want it tied into my main tank for stability.

ideas?

oh by the way. 1 of the pups died yesterday, im not sure why. was eating and showed no signs of abuse.

That was not really the question tho. Offcourse you can use a "sump" under the tank to provide the pups a place to be at. The bigger the better. Sounds like a great idea to me!

i am thinking 75g tank for the sump with 800gph flow. no baffles. hopefully thats not too much current.

i was thinking 500gph is enough but i can find an overflow box that size. they are either 300 or 800.

i have kept many small rays in my sump fine.except one time a pearl damaged him self on the pump.its fine as long as your sump still functions ,dont change anything.

i do like the penthouse idea but wont work for me. i have no place to tie it down.

right now i have 2 fluval fx5's for filtration and 1 emporer 400 for chemical media.
i would like to remove 1 of the fx5's and replace it with the sump. im worried i will be removing to much bio filtration. the sump, besides the filter sock wont do much as far as holding bacteria.

any thoughts?

1 thing that bothers me about the fx5's is i have a fine sand bottom. the rays stir up the sand and it gets caught in the impeller and locks it up. i have to clean them out every 3 weeks or less.

Put some driftwood infront of the intakes, then they cant stir the sand at that area, a big root. Works like a charm here, have the finest sand available here, and nothin in the fx5. I also have 2xFx5. I would NOT take one of them out, you have bigger bioload now with the babys, so i would never do that. Maybe you can hook one of them up to the sump besides? I havent seen your setup, so i dont know, but dont move it :) Your tank will definetly crash.
