some fixtures allow you to use either but not alll of them!

From what I understand its the ballast that determines if the fixture will handle T8's or T12's. I have several $9.00 shop light fixtures that I have been picking up because they have electronic ballasts and they support T8 lights. They even say that on the box. Locally I pick them up at Home Depot, as the ones at Lowes have magnetic ballasts for the same price point. Of course I am tearing them apart and putting them into my aquarium hoods, not leaving the shoplights stock.

NO, short answer no they are wired up difrently... it wont even light up, the balasts are difrent they operate totaly diffrently, i have been through this when upgrading my cichlids lights...

Yeah most fixures can useT12's or T8's just not t5's haha. If your fixure was made in this decade it should not be a problem
