Like from apple trees or whatever i have in my yard. Do they leach poisons or toxic gums or saps?????I'm trying tto go for the mangrove root look so i want a big peice and i was thinking of cutting a branch off a tree. Also can i leave the paper like bark on it?

Howdy,

That would not be a good idea. Fresh wood still contains too many nutrients, causing a decay which ruins your water quality. Wood should have spent a significant amount of time (months/years) in the water before you put it in your tank. By that time, all bark should have rotted off. Check out your local creeks

Applewood rots fairly quickly, as do most fruit woods. to use the safely you almost have to kiln dry them, and even so you should replace it yearly. Even if the wood itself does not cause problems, they have a rep for hosting fungal growths.

Your wood would be too fresh to get it. You can buy mangroves for your tank or get fake roots from the fish store.

I second that, I got a good piece of wood off an abandend beaver dam and put it in my planted tank. it did take a little while to weigh down, though.

Also, check the area around your local creeks. If it is an industrialized area or around agriculural fields, I would be a little hesitant of putting it in my tank without a lot of cleaning and soaking.
