Although play sand is a very very wide range of partical sizes, which means you will want to wash it thoroughly to remove the finer particles...
Pool Filter Sand is the sxact same material (silica) but is a refined range of particle sizes. Some rinsing is required to remove dust formed from the sand grinding diring shipping, but it will not contain the fine particles that play sand requires.
Pool Filter Sand costs a bit more, but fine particles damaging the filters can cost you a lot more...
