Can i use some packaging foam for filter media?

My brother recently recieved something he bough of the interner recently, and it came packed in two nice blocks of fine soft foam, its coloured black and i was just wondering if it would be fish safe, because i know things can put chemicals into the water..

Noone can really answer this question with 100% accuracy except the maker of the foam what exactly was this foam packaged with ? Its more than likely fine but depending on whats in your tank is it really worth the risk.

i personally wouldnt risk it, most packing foam is a weak plastic material that i would think would probably break down in the tank, if your looking for cheap filter media just put a bunch of pot scrubbies in your filter they work awesome
