Is that some kind of metal running in the rock? If so , that would be a no.

I looks kinda metal-ish , I though it was some kind of mineral but anyways im not gonna use it. To me it was just a long shot, im trying to be very economical with this tank. Question. If i go to homedepot or lowes to buy slate is their a specific kind i should get?

Ive used that kind of rock before with african cichlids, didnt seem to have any problems. Can't say for sure though if its the same kind of rock.

Dont mean to derail any1's thread but this is kinda similar. What about a piece of a petrified trees.... could you use those in tanks

Looks like Iron pyrite if it is Id say dont use it.
If the shiny is mica it should be ok.

Yes, just be careful of sharp edges.

:iagree: Does it flake off? If so it's mica..Sometimes binding layes with mica desolve easy. If it's been out under a tree has fertilizer or bug spray gotten on it? Test it in a bucket of water for a while (a month since your not using it right now) would make a nice addition.

Could be Leaverite..

As for slate, they don't usually give you a choice...look for the hardest pieces, see if you can get it wet in the planting area to see what it will look like, I've gotten some ugky streaks in some taht I couldn't see till it was wet.

It really looks like Iron Pyrite aka fools gold and I would NOT put that in a tank. I have some lace rock that is that color, but it also cost me 40 dollars and you are going economical, so that is out. The lace rock does look really nice though.
