My neighbor was throwing out a 20g xh tank and metal stand. The stand is the kind that can hold two aquariums, one on top of the other. The aquarium was used to keep hamsters..... Clearly, I need to reseal the tank as the little furry mammel did in fact chew on the sealant. Not a problem, easy enough... But, what about the hamster germs that are in the tank??? Is that toxic for the fish? thoughts, ideas???

if your going to break the tank down to reseal it just turn the glass inside out.bleach water solution 1 part bleach 10 part water leave sit for a day rinse rinse rinse.set it up and throw some guppy's or betas in there for a week or so

I have personally gone through this...if the damage to the silicone is bad, I'd rather just replace it...in terms of "germs" the problem is more that urine will have crusted all over the glass....I'd soak in hot water (maybe with bleach) and take a scraper to the gross bits.

why replace it? reasealing isn't hard

a good soak in hot water and a scraper/ razor blade would get rid of anything and more than likely there very few germs that can infect a hamster and a fish

I wouldn't do it man. I put a fish in an old aquarium that had been used for a hamster and he started growing fur.

Was it an actual aquarium or a Terrarium? Terrariums use thinner glass and aren't meant to hold a lot of water. Just make sure it's an actual aquarium and scrub it down with bleach.

LOL,what about the teeth?...I would'nt worry about the germs after a good rinsing as was already said. I've always wanted one of those types of double decker stands.

I think he is talking about replacing the silicon, as in resealing.

I will be removing the silicone from where it is most seriously chewed off and then resealing those sections. I will not be removing ALL of the silicone on this project. I'm thinking of being super crazy and drilling a 5/8" bulkhead (If I break the tank, no biggie, it's only a 20, and it would give me practice), getting a second tank for the bottom shelf and creating a loop. gravity feed the water from the top to the bottom, then a fluval 205 (surface height of water in bottom tank will be above the top of the filter and using that as a return pump... I have an extra one of these filters laying around

That would be great. So now when your top tank gets Ich, your bottom one will get it too! :D
