can i use this as filter media?

hi everyone

i am new fish keeping and trying to make a DIY PVC canister filter for my 25g tank. i am looking for a cheap and easily available bio filter media to put in my canister filter. my question is: would this make a good bio media filter? what would u guys use as media in a 4" PVC diy canister 1ft tall?

I think that would be pretty lousy bio media. I like the coarse sponge idea myself.

I would check out a aquaclear hang on back filter instead of making my own canister. It would probably be cheaper and a whole lot less hassle. Diy canisters often have leakage issues and are usually a bear to maintain!

Way better options availiable, that would not do too great as its surface is mostly smooth and not allot of area for growth on it.
