can jd and jewel breed?

I can't honestly say I've ever seen it before, however I'm not an aficionado of hybrids either. While they look very similar to each other The split between Africa and South/Central America occurred about 175 mya so there has been quite a bit of time since the initial isolation began or the last common ancestor. West African cichlids however are still more closely related to American cichlids than either are to the cichlids of the rift valley which is only about +/-10 my old (depending on the source of information), Mbuna et al are not as far removed from their salt water ancestors and in general tend to more closely resemble them then they do either the West African or American species. Having said all of this while I doubt the eggs will be viable, try it and see what happens. Someone on here may have already tried and maybe will post a more definitive answer.

Every time I start talking about cichlid evolution all I hear are crickets..........lol

I agree with Tom, that multi million year evolutionary split between the old and new world might be a bit too much to allow for recognition as cousins.
Jewels have been introduced to Cuatro Cienegas in Mexico and as far as I know, have not interbred with Herichthys minkleyi. In fact, it seems the introduction has had a negative impact on the ecosystem, and those people that care(such as the Desert Fishes Council), are trying to rid the area of the alien invaders.

Anything on this yet?

I hear berry white is good music also. To, you know, get the mating thing happening.
