My husband and I have converted to the dark side... but neither of us know that much. SO here are a few questions...

Can live sand turn dead live rock into live rock again?

Why is their red algae growing on everything?

Our white Fiji sand is turning dark under the top few layers... why?

The salinity is 1.021, temp is 76.5, tanks been running for 7 days

Please help!

The bacteria living in the sand will expand to the rock assuming you keep feeding it.
The red slime is a bacteria as well... usually showing up due to high phosphate levels.
The 'dark' areas are probably pockets not getting circulation deep into the substrate, turn it over a little.

What fish are you planning on?

Thank you! Start off small probably with some hardy fish... any suggestions?

what type of water are you using?? make sure its RO water or you'll have lots of problems... with phosphates and silica or something like that... that red slime is no good... you can buy some meds to get rid of it but make sure its coral safe if you have coral... you want to get purple algae with purple up i think... and make sure you have at least one turbo sail per gallon of water i think the salinity should be at 1.023-1.024 and a bit higher if you have coral

another thing is if you want good circulation stay away from a power head get one of these Hydor Koralia circulation pumps. it moves water much better then a power head... power head only moves one direction while the hydor circulates water... o and it will take a while for the dead live rock to become live again...

I like the hydors, but I love the modded maxijets

My husband built a jet set system that goes under the sand... its pretty neat... but the algea slime stuff has almost completely taken over... and we only have tap water... is their anyway to get rid of phosphates and stuff?... help!!!

you need RO, most lfs's will sell it around 50 cents a gallon. and filefish, how do you mod a maxijet?
