I have regular 2 x 10 or 2x12 floor joists. I was going to position the tank across the joist, on an outside wall. Should my floor be able to take the weight. Or would I be better off putting the tank on concrete in the basement?

That should be fine. Wood's surprisingly strong, and putting the tank near any load-bearing wall will only help.

As an extra margin of safety, I have the floor joists supported by 4x4s and steel floor jacks. This is under my 240gal. It makes it very strong, and gives me peace of mind in my old house. You may be fine, but safety is first in my book.

Yea sag is when the floorboards bend
With the tank across the joists near a bearing wall it should be fine.
I had to put the 125 in my kitchen parallel to the joists so I added 2 extra joists and put in 2 posts for peace of mind

A lot of you seem to worry about nothing. When was the last time you saw a tank fall through the floor?

In my previous appartment in England, it was an rickety old victorian townhouse, creaking floorboards etc. I had a 150 and a 190 in the same room, I didn't even bother to check if they were perpendicular or not. No falling through the floor, no sagging.
