hello there , i recently bought some new fish 6 green terrors 6 tiger oscars , a jack dempsey and a blue acara ,
i now only have 2 oscars left i have treated the tank for internal bacteria but still another oscar died and i have noticed that all my green terrors have lifted or raised or loose scales on their foreheads but they still seem healthy does anyone know what it could be because the oscars get white patches then popeye then die ?

how are you so sure its bacteria ... maybe the tank was not ready for that kind of stock and since you have done so much its just in constant cycle ..

the problem 90% of people have when they get new fish is not having the tank set up correctly for the stock its going to hold .. then you get ammonia in the tank .. say your bio load can handle 50 .. then you put in 14 fish .. and the bio load goes up to 400 ... it takes time for the bio load to catch up .. (assuming you have the correct amount of filtration) and you get a mini cycle .. or a full cycle ...

i think we need more information about the tank ...

tank size ... filter size .. fish size .. was the tank fully cycled .. what are the water parameters ... and so on .... we need a lot of information before we can really help much

also i have stepped up the water changes to a 50% change every 3 days but they still get popeye and die

water changes are not the fix for the problem most of the time ... that adds more stress to the fish .. and if its the water your putting into the tank that is the problem .. it could be making it worse ..

the last thing i do when i have a problem is start stressing the fish out more .. aka no lights in the tank .. and no water changes unless i REALLY HAVE TO ..

the tank has been cycled for about 2.5 years because i was just using the tank for growing melanochromis auratus fry which had about 70 of them in
when i got these new fish i noticed when i bought them they had a couple of white blemishes on the oscars and raised scales on my green terrors
now the oscars have died one by one but so far i havent lost any green terrors
my tank is a 70 uk gallon 4 ft rena bow fronted , my filter is a eheim 2028 external
none of the little fish that were already in the tank have died and still look in peak condition

ok well you still could have caused a cycle .. adding that much bio load to the tank .. but i should catch up ... but there is a chance that you added some fish to the tank that where doomed anyways .. which is why when you buy sick fish you should always keep them in a temp tank to heal and treat ... never add sick fish to anything ... they make other sick fish worse .. and kill off health fish ...

quarantine tanks are important if your going to buy sketchy fish .. or but fish from sketchy people ...

my bio load should be fine because i was feeding the fry about 4 good feeds per day

yes but the fry only put out so much waste ... which means there is only so much food for the bio to eat .. so there is only so much bio ... more fish .. = more waste .. and the cycle builds .. adds .. or starts over ..

the only reason i bring it up is because i had a tank that was set up and running great .. with 1 small fish in it .. when i added 6 small fish to the tank .. the tank started a cycle .. so i took a filter out of another tank and added it .. it stopped the cycle .. and allowed the filters on the tank to catch up ...

yes i know that but im convinced there is a disease that is catching up on all the fish in there , i think when i first got the oscars i was probably overfeeding trying to get them growing quicker which i think triggered the internal bacteria ,
what do you think could be causing the raised scales on my green terrors its weird because they are nearly in the same place on each one could it be hith ?

i doubt its HITH .. it really sounds to me like the water is poor ... have you tested your water ... knowing what the real parameters are would help a lot ..

but the fish could have been sick when you got them .. and then i would not know what to do .. never had to face that ... and maybe someone else could chime in with better knowledge about treating fish if it is bacteria
