This is probably a bit of bad info from the web, but I read that nerites can be kept with loaches.

I just got a red spot nerite, and my 1.5" loach was trying to eat it so they are separated.

Clown loaches and any other loach from the botiine genus will easily destroy all snails. Do NOT combine clown loaches and nerite snails. If you insist keeping loaches with snails, give dojos and kuhlis a try.

Oh, I forgot. If you can keep nerites in a river specialist setup, then hillstream loaches will go together especially if you have abundant algae supply since both will outcompete for algae which is their primary diet although nerites can appreciate cucumber slices and pea flavored gel foods and hillies can eat veggies, bloodworms and even commercial pellets.

you may have BETER luck with nerites than snais because they arent as easily flipped but it would still be a matter of time before they are eaten

Not all nerites will have the same protection though. I collected a variety of nerite species and examined their shell structure and even way of protection. Too bad a few species are easily exposed particularly the Septaria sp. especially if they accidentally fall on their backs.

I love snail-eating fish :)
That aside, I would like to find a snail that I could keep in a non-planted tank (sans loaches, of course) to eat algae. Guess I'm going to have to try to find some mystery snails, but the ones that I find look very unhappy, and likely harbor "bugs" I don't desire in my clean, healthy tanks.

Raychel, try the Aquariacentral, our sister site. Lot of folks there keep apple snails and will be willing to sell you some, notably dixienut.

I separated the snails and clown loaches, i will not be keeping them together.

the red spot nerite is really tearing through the algae, and I have 8 different ones coming in from Bob's Tropical Plants tomorrow.
