can ornate gets whitespot because today i've seen mine basically flash against the sand - never in all the time i've had him have i ever seen him do this. he has done this twice now. so what i want to know is can ornates get whitespot (ich as you americans call it) ?

Yep, most fish can. Sometimes it resides in their gills, and is hard to spot- you might want to inspect the fish carefully. But keep in mind fish will "itch" every once and a while, so unless it is happening quite regularly I don't think it's anything to worry about.

I have seen rope fish with ich. However it is more likely a parasite. Any new fish lately? Inspect for little white worms on your bichir.

If you bought some new fish, then this is where quarantining comes into place. Did you quarantine your new fish? To be more precise, do you ever quarantine every new fish at all? Regardless of the sources, we need to quarantine every new fish to avoid further health problems with our older stocks. There are plenty of parasites that are often overlooked, whether the source is reputable or not. I would advise quarantining for 3-4 weeks. The longer, the better as most parasites have a longer lifecycle and may make it difficult for you to eliminate them in the end.

There are many parasites that can be associated with the scratching symptoms. It is not only ich that causes this unusual behavior when done frequently. Flukes, nematodes, external parasites and flagellates are also responsible for that. If at all possible, get praziquantel and treat your fish for possible flukes. Praziquantel is a mild treatment and does not harm the beneficial bacteria so you can give this a shot to destroy the possible flukes.

thanks for the replies everyone, i've kept a close eye on him and he hasnt been flashing after the last two times i saw. also tried to see if there were any worms or anything on him, but nothing. hopefully he will be ok.
