Hi, I’ve been researching this for a while and would have tried this if I didn’t wind up with a female con and rainbow, but I haven’t actually found anything on if the two can hybridize.
Can the two simply not interbreed, or has it just not been tried?
It seems like they are related closely enough where it makes sense that they can (considering the existence of a blood parrot or red devil jag cross).
Anyone tried or heard of this and any pics of the offspring?

Rainbows are CA and can cross with any other CA as well as Cichlasoma festae and Australoheros sp. red ceibal. Some guy in a group i'm in on FB has managed to cross Rainbows with a few things but i don't remember exactly what. I think the biggest issue would be crossing a Rainbow with a considerably larger Cichlid and it getting killed in the process. Rainbow X Dovii should be possible but I wouldn't try it with a 5" Rainbow and a 12" Dovii or whatever.

I've got a male con and female rainbow. They show no interest in each other. No chasing nothing. A friend of mine has a male Jack and a female rainbow that paired up but yet to get any survivors, has alot of Central's so probably get eaten.

Slight update to my last post. The female did lay eggs but the male did not participate and got chased. Might be better to try female convict to male rainbow. With convicts they prefer caves and my rainbows always prefer on a rock

I am trying a convict Texas female with my male rainbow. Intial introduction male was courting her, now it is her courting him. I may place a rock or two in there since he is not a fan of the hides. I will post updates if anything happens

Yes please post photos.

I have used a hybrid Texas convict female to try cross with a male rainbow. They have went through the spawning motions lots but nothing ever came off it. The rainbow loses interest and the female hybrid doesn't appear to lay eggs even though on one occasion her tube was present. Almost phantom like guarding the cave with nothing in it. Project stopped for now, the female is back in my female tank and is courting a female rainbow now ?‍♂️

Not sure how to share a Facebook post I saw. It was on a Jack Dempsey group, shows male JD and female rainbow protecting their fry. It just happened to show on my group page
