can raw shrimp be a staple food?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, it can be. It's a good idea to mix it up, but I've used shrimp for a staple for my rays for a while. Since I have some CA/SA cichlids with my rays it's their staple too:)

For most bread and butter fish, shrimp shouldnt be a staple, however large cichlids would do fine on it. But you would have to feed some kind of other food as a staple if the shrimpin' business goes low.

i tried feeding them shrimp once (market raw shrimp) and the water went all cloudy (convicts) should this be a problem. And how do you prepare shrimp without adding all the vitamins because i dont have any of those. Should i just let water run and wash them?

Seems best to thaw them with cold water so as not to lose any of the minerals or vitamins.

I just take a plastic cup with the Aquariums water and i thaw them out there for a few minutes than cut them to size and feed them to my cichlids and poly's. It can deffenetly be a staple food for your fish.

should i worry about them clouding up the water? How should i store a lb of shrimp? Should i put some water in them or just put them in the freezer?

i freeze it,no water.
then fill a cup with hot water
soak it
then peel off shell
then cut into small pieces "with my fingers"
then rinse it all off
then feed.
:D
i used to do all that then add a days feeding to each cube in an ice tray.
then just thaw a cube.
but i go through it to fast now. :irked:

rinsed raw shrimp will not cloud the water as long as you do not over feed. I use it quite a bit.
