Can Softshelled Turtles be kept with other Turtle Species?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Softshells can have their shells scratched pretty easily by other turtles which can lead to secondary infections. Unless you had a huge setup I'd keep them separate from other species.

I kept a spiny softshell with a red-eared slider in my foolish youth, and the spiny did end up getting some nasty scratches, which got infected. I moved him to a new tank and he survived, but always bore scars.

Anyone else care to share their experiences?

I'm really into the prospect of having a turtle pond with different species of turtle, so if anyone else could verify, it would help.

Thank you guys for this info. You seemed to have backed up some of my previous fears, but would still like to hear from others as to how this worked out for them. :)

I wouldn't house softshells with any other turtles, especially the ones you mentioned.

Softshells can be quite aggressive, so there's a chance that they can hurt other tank mates. Fly rivers are known to be especially aggressive if they are older.
Red eared Sliders are pretty nasty too. If it comes to feeding, they are furious and will scratch and bite for their personal benefit.
Snakenecks are adapted to a special diet and are much calmer in their behaviour than other turts.

Bottom line: You will be much happier if you keep them in separate tanks. You can also keep fish with these turtles, so you can combine the fish and the turtle hobby.

First of you couldnt combine both the flys or the snakeneck whit a softy, why? Because they come from diferent places in the globe, NEVER combine turtles of a diferent geografic area as it increases greatly the possibility of desiases and injurys. Also even if the flys are nasty they are themselfes very prone to injurys so no good. Snakenecks are pacefull turtles wich existence would be turned to misery in the presence of a agressive softshell. A red eared slider with softshell combo isnt suitable for normal tanks for the reasons others already said, but in a really big outdoor tank its possible that you could combine big sliders and cooters with US softys like big spineys and floridas. However male softys had to be left out of the equacion, they are very agressive to other turtles;)
