I'm going to say you are talking about Hoplias malabaricus First pic . They will get big and they are a fish you don't want to put with ANYTHING.

Rainbow is what i was talking about. I had one for 3 days. then I was gone for the night came back and mom said he was dead. I am looking for another one. I think my FH got him but he was 2 time his size. The wolf was 3inch and my FH is around 1 - 1 1/2inch so im thinking of using the new 40g with builtin sump i found to house one. the guy i got them from wont get any in till next year. so DOSE ANY! HAVE ONE FOR SALE AND WILL SHIP TO SO CAL?????????

Hoplias malabaricus is illegal in cali, no idea about the rainbow one.

Erythrinus sp. are also illegal in California.

Irregardless, a nice shoal of exodons can be successfully kept with the rainbow wolffish. Leporinus fasciatus is also a good tankmate.

flamer - a 1.5 inch flowerhorn would not have killed your rainbow wolf. Look in the video section at bsplenden's wolf fish video. That's a rainbow wolf.

A 3 inch rainbow wolf would murder a 1.5 inch flowerhorn.

Maybe your water sucks or he was unhealthy to begin with, they are supposedly not quite as hardy as hoplias.
