i just got a 150 gallon glass tank
dimensions:6' long, 2' wide, 2' tall

i dont know what i should use to filter the tank.
i've never had a tank this big before.
i've never dealt with pumps or sumps or any of that.

whats the best thing to use to filter my tank.
of coarse i want it nice and clean so i dont mind over filtering it a little.

:cry:CAN YOU HELP ME?!?

You just gave him 30 gallons lol. What a great gift.

so now i ask... does anyone have a
Rena FilStar xP3 Canister Filter

for sale?? lol

Canister filters are real nice, dirty water goes in, clean water comes out.
For a tank that big though you might need two, one on eather end.

Fluval 405s are good canisters also. You can get an FX5 on ebay for only $200 though, which is better than multiple small canisters. Eheim is a popular brand, but more expensive so I've never used it.

There are a few things you need to know;
1st. For a healthy tank, you should have between 3-10 cycles per hour. That means all your 180 gallons of water will get filtered 3-10 times every hour. This highly depends on your fich stock so if you know what you are going to put in it, let us know.

Canister filters are a sealed filtration system. They are the most economic choice when wanting to have a good (sometimes high) flow rate without breaking the bank. Their power consumption is very very low compared to water pumps in a sump (aka Wet/Dry Filter).

Canisters can be easy to clean and easy to start up and take up, most of the time, very little space. I would stay away from the Fluval x04 and x05 series filters for your size tank. They are also a PITA to prime and don't have the GPH output you need.

Wet/Dry filters are a whole different world and for you just starting out, I would not look into these for your filtration. I would read about them though.

Everyone has their likings to specific filters. I like the Fluval Fx5 so I will reccomend it. There are some Eheim filters out there that could work as well but most have very low flow rates. They also cost $$$4.

Fluval Fx5 for a 180 Gallon. I would get two of them. They have a tested flow rate of 600 GPH. With two of filters, together you will have 1200 GPH with about 6 cycles per hour.

You can find more info on the Fx5 at my site, which I hope it still works (unpaid bills).
