Wondering if these fish will be compatible with a lightly planted tank:

clown loach's
silver dollars
jd's

are all 3 of these fish fine with a planted tank or will it be a waste of my time to plant anything?

Yes, however I would get fast growing/ sturdy plants. I would worry most about the JDs if they get full size. Large cichlids (those can get around 10inches) are known to really destroy some plants as I'm sure you know. However, as long as the tank is large enough and the plants grow fast enough you should be good.

so just typical ... java fern's etc should be fine in there?

i have silver dollars and they tear up every kind of plant i put in so i gave up and only have driftwood and rocks lol
maybe you could get away with java moss?

Jds will uproot your plants, while silver dollars will eat all of them

Ya .. after researching more into aquascaping with real plants I've decided against this route. However I do still want some green in my tank for a natural look so thinking maybe a few articial plants for this tank as well. Every tank I've aquired in the past has always had an assortment of artifical plants included So I've never bought any before. Anyone know types .. styles .. brands of artifical plants that are better (look better and stay in place better) then others? Also anywhere online that sells plants or a package of assorted artifical plants for a relatively cheap price?

I find most of the ones sold at Pet Stores to be really fake looking. I just picked up a few at Michaels (an arts and crafts chain), that look real nice, and so far my sunfish seem to love them. I am not sure of the brand, but they are made of silk. Also, unlike aquarium designed plants, these don't come with suction cup bottoms, so I had to bend them at the "root" and place some rocks on them. I was weary of going with fake plants, but right now, I love these ones
