Hi. Go easy on me with this one because I'm sure it will tick off some of you. I've heard that since silver and black arowanas are skinnier (hence more flexible) than jardinis and Asians, that you can keep them in tanks that are the same width or slightly smaller than their length. As in, a 26 inch aro in a 24 inch wide tank. So, if this can be done, couldn't a black Arowana be kept in a 6' by 2' by 2' tank for life? Because I've herd that they stay a little smaller than silvers at around 35 inches in the wild. In captivity however, wouldn't a black stay 26-28 inches? Because if all of the above is true, one could be kept in my 180 right? Personally, I think that if the fish is only slightly longer than the width of the tank it would be okay because you never see fully grown arowanas facing you. They're always facing the end of the tank and just turn around to go back. So, can it be done or not?

I was just referring to the fact that even when people have 2' arowanas in 4' wide tanks they don't stop to look at you, and just keep moving.

I see what you mean but I still don't think a 180 is large enough for a full grown aro. Id love to have a tank large enough to house one someday.

Hmmmm. I know enough to tell you that if you have a 180 that a jardini could at least be kept in there for life. I was just trying to see if it would work.

No 72" long tank is too short for a arowana that will get 30" plus. You'd have more of an arguement with 8 foot lond 240g tank. IMO the width/depth of the tank has more to do with the arowana feeling secure the turning or swimming room, though when the arowana does spazz out, the extra space can aid in avoiding injury/death.

This is a matter of opinion. Most feel that a 24" jardini require a 30" deep tank.

bigger is always better.

my 240, 8x2x2 i believe is still too small for a Silver/black aro.

maybe it would be good for a young .jardini/asian

if i ever get back into arowana, i will have a 3ft wide tank minimum
