Can this work long term?

I once kept a single RBP in a 25 gallon tank for 5 years. I lost it due to poor water quality (my stupidity)

My new plan is to keep a single RBP in a 45 gallon tank with a Fluval U4 internal and a Large capacity canister and a heater.

Can RBPs be kept alone? I don't have the room for more than one. And no I don't want exodons or whatever they are called.

I know the general consensus is a school, but can a single fish be kept. I'm thinking of employing a thin mirror affixed to the outside glass on either end to give it company.

This will work fine for you. Most of the time they will kill each other off and you will only have one any how.

A solo red in a 45 will work but he may be very shy because there aren't fish to school with.

+1 they tend to be far more timid and lazy. What about another type of piranha? Most serra will take a long time to outgrow that tank if purchased small and are solo fish anyways
