You can only breed oscars with other Astronotus species and besides the oscar there is only one other confimed species. Astronotus crassipinnis. Their next closest relatives belong to the Chaetobranchus genus and it's likely they can cross with them as well. I have never seen these fish in the hobby. There are currently two Chaetobranchus species classified.

As a rule of thumb, things that can hybridize are usually of the same genus. You cna find this by running a fishbase search of all fishes within the genus. www.fishbase.org

Druu; I can think of quite a long list of hybrids where animals from different genera were used.
