The middle fish is a male, the other two are female.
Thank you. But for my own education, how did you determine that.
once again thanks.

With most Heros species the females lack the facial markings of the male, as apparent in your photos.

Are they new to your tank? Not trying to critique them, but they look a bit rough to me.

I agree they don't look in good, condition, especially the last one, perhaps they are in a fish shop?

Someone told me that the two females are red shoulder severums but the male is not

Hey Frank
Great to hear from you.
I like that little redtail cat!
There appear to be two female red shoulder severums (females lack the facial spots) and one male Heros species.
He's not a red shoulder severum, but a different species of Heros (probably H. efasciatus) from a separate origin.
All the best to you.
Jeff

Any additional thoughts on the male. Three prominent people in the hobby has said that there are two females and s male based on the photo. But two have mentioned that the male is not a Red Shoulder Severum.
Any thoughts on the male type

Not a problem !!! I welcome your thoughts. they are in my friends tank and he just got them 3 days ago. Sold to him as Red Shoulder Severums. I had my doubts about them so I started reaching out about the gender of the fish and was surprised when told the male is not a Red Shoulder severum. I purchase 8 smaller ones snd he purchased the trio. I hope that I have Red Shoulder Severums. SMDH

The two females appear to be rotkeil, or at least have rotkeil in them, but they are in poor condition I’m afraid. They look rather old and/or emaciated. The last one is the worst of the bunch but both have signs of pitting in the face from HITH, which can be water quality, lack of nutrition, parasites, or a combination of the three. That goes hand in hand with the emaciated look.

The male appears in slightly better shape but it is definitely not rotkeil. Without a catch location as a wild-caught fish, it’s likely to be a mutt Heros which often gets lumped into the efasciatus or “green severum” name.
