well I got my 300 gallon tank apart and came up with a crazy idea about an in the wall tank. You would only see the front and the back and filteration would be in the room behind the wall. I would just be doubling the width of the tank from 2' to 4'. The front and back glass panels I have now are 8' long and 30" tall. They are 1/2" thick glass. I know 1/2" is not thick enough for a 600 gallon tank but could I use both panels to have an inch thick?

The only thing I'd be worried about is if moister got between. Then mold would form then you wouldn't be able to see the fish or clean the glass

I would not recommend it but it also looks like you don't need it. If I am correct, I understand that you just want to make your current tank wider without making it taller. This means that the pressure on the glass does not change because it is determined by height. I believe you will be fine with just your original 1/2" pane of glass.

Would that even double the strength of the glass ?because each piece would still have the same max pressure point I would guess. But I'm not 100 percent sure.

99% sure that would have no added value in strength but gallons does not matter for thickness, only height. A .5 inch piece of glass could hold back the ocean if it was only 2 feet deep.

I have 900g pushing on .5 inch plate glass with no issues.

ya not something I would do, I have seen double glass tanks, but not for strength. but for like your double pain windows.

If im good with just the 1/2" thick front then thats even better, ill just sell the rest of the glass. Still trying to figure out what to do. The 300 split a seam so I was going to rebuild it, well I really wanted something wider with the big fish I will be housing, then I went over board on the filtration with 3 55 gallon drums, so was thinking I got the filtration and the glass panel why not build a plywood tank especially cause you can only see the front anyway. I would have half the tank in 1 room in a finished wall and the other half in the filter room

It would not work in that it is not solid. What the water pressure would is break the first panel and then the other panel would go. But it would be cool if you could build a giant plywood tank with the glass panels side by side creating a 16 foot long tank.
