I found one of my crenicichla juvies dead, with a ruptured gut and no other apparent injuries or illness...they are quite the gluttons...I feed frozen foods and freeze dried krill one time per day. I feed a mixture as they share a grow out tank with my geophagus... There are no fish that would kill in the tank any ideas? These little guys would eat til their stomachs bloated, is it possible they ate to much?

I don't have any experience with feeding a fish to death, but if this is possible, I am cautiously curious in regards to my catfish who seems willing to eat until bursting. My apologies for your loss.

* my only uneducated thought pertains to the freeze dried krill. Is is possible that the dehydrated krill played any part in the rupturing of your young fishes stomach?

I guess it could be possible man you would have to feed a lot I imagine . My blue talapia will eat all day long but just have a 1foot long streaming poop following him. Maybe the freeze dry food expanded? Multiple meals are better.

over feeding long term will kill your fish by shortening there life span, not heard of fish eating till there guts split, most cichlids will eat then regurgitate or spit it out if to much.

Do you re-hydrate the freeze dried foods before feeding? They will swell over time in contact with liquid and can swell in the gut.

I use the freeze dried krill and hydrate them over night with Boyds vita-Chem in a little Tupperware container.

Actually overfeeding is the 2nd biggest cause of death in ornamental fish, underfeeding being the 1st.....

A hungry fish is a healthy fish IMO and IME.

But for younger fish they metabolize food faster thus more feedings are necessary, when they get older they slow down so bigger less often feedings are good but it all depends on the fish! Variety is great just balance it out!

If Water quality/nutrition/tank space are ideal in most cases the fish will be a bombshell!

I lost my 2 greediest eaters this year, both subsequent to FD krill treats. both stole more than their fair share away from tankmates. I did not hydrate it before feeding.
One large tapajos redhead female quickly developed a swollen gut after eating, but progressed into a slow demise which took many days. at final point being pine-cone dropsy, I euthanized her.
My 2nd fish, male A. heckelii, died within hours of stuffing himself & was the absolute picture of health & vigor before that.
I now believe FD krill is not good for exceptionally gluttonous fish, unless first rehydrated. Plz note, this was not his first feeding of the day & he shouldn't have been super hungry. this was only intended as a tank "snack".
Member notho2000 did tell me that that heckelii are known to experience sudden death. all I know is mine went into his spiral after greedily eating the krill & getting an expression of "OH NO" on his face, with no other stressors before. Before failing, he appeared to have some minor difficulty swallowing... maybe just too full?

^for whatever it's worth to you.
