1st tank - i'd do the following. Use a white sand substrate. lose the wood. add a bunch of interesting rock - form a rock wall for your affricans. lose the plants. add some loaches.

2nd tank - I dunno - I kind of like it really.

Deep six the red gravel and chuck the wood..The other tank looks pretty good.

What should I put instead of the wood. should I change the gravel into something else like more natural.

Maybe invest in something that matters more then asthsetics! Like a better filter or more media, a good test kit, grounding probe. Idk jus my opinion. Like when ppl mod cars and they get paint and wheels or ground effects, why not put the $$ and effort into the engine??! Instead of it looking fast it actually is fast...

Your tanks look fine it is totally preference, if u like it thats all that matters cuz its YOUR TANK!

either way GL

I like the look of wood, I have it in all my aquariums. The rock is for the African's. I like his tank, I think it's pretty, and I don't even mind the red gravel, that's just preference.

The wood is not so bad but you don't see much of it in African cichlid biotopes.Maybe you can work it into the other tank where it would look more in place......Yes,natural looking gravel for sure and dark to help bring out the cichlids colors.
