I'm setting up a club talk for people looking to start their first rift lake tank, and what I would like from my Monsterfish friends are some reflections on why you chose the rift lake cichlids and what keeps you interested.

If you feel real ambitions you could post a few full tank shots of your favorite set up I would appreciate it.

be sure to credit the owner of the tanks.

Thanks,
Matt Kogo

IMO, african rift lake cichlids present the greatest color and beauty of any freshwater fish which is enough to make them worthwhile. However they also are very aggresive which makes watching them very entertaining especially when your dominant male attempts to mate with the females of the tank. They are truly amazing fish to keep and watch.

As far as why I'm choosing to keep the Africans. Thats easy, because many African cichlids are close to being extinct. Which is why I'm trying to puzzle together a new set up for Haplochromis Sp. Pictures will come soon sorry I dont have them now

The reason I keep AC is due to the great diversity that they offer a keeper. You have mbuna and peacocks with their amazing colors, but you also have the behavioral diversity of Tangs. You can set up the largest tanks for some types and keep others in relatively small tanks. You call a fish room with them and no tank or setup will look alike. They have amazing feeding and breeding behaviors as well. Just when you feel that you are bored there is something new or different to observe.

Thanks Guys! Those are the exact type of quotes I was looking for. I think I will use your quotes and avatars as an intro to the main presentation (if you don't mind).... It will be a great attention getter, and introduction to the online community.

I have a few great pictures so far including the outdoor setup below, please feel free to share your fish room pics or other favorites as well.

I enjoy them because of the large variety of color and patterns that can be kept together creating a very diverse scene that is constantly changing. Their aggression also lends to a very active tank that is full of movement and is very entertaining to watch instead of having one larger wet pet that just sits there and doesn't do much.
