I bought this from a local fish store and cannot for the life of me remember it's scientific or regular name. Can anybody help me out?

Indonesian Datnoid - Datnioides microlepis

I know because I own one, and everyone else is right they are not cichlids but can rival them in personality. Never be afraid to call the LFS back and ask what you bought haha, I've done it a couple times
:D

FYI: They grow fairly slow especially compared to cichlids so be careful who you house it with or it may become lunch. GL

just fair warning, Datnoids can be very finicky eaters, but they are very cool. I used to have one in a 150 gallon mixed with various small to medium sized cichlids. Whenever I would come up to the tank to feed, all of the other fish would swarm to the top waiting for their pellets. My dat wouldn't touch the pellets though so I had freeze dried krill in another container. The Dat could distinguish between the different containers. When I held the pellet container he had no reaction, but as soon as I grabbed the Krill container the Dat raced to the top. I would hold a piece of krill in front of the glass and the Dat would come right to it and I would then lead him to another location in the tank away from all the other fish and the Dat followed. I'd then drop in the krill and he gobbled it up. I'm a huge cichlid lover but that Datnoid may have been my all time favorite. Unfortunately I lost him and several others during a move. :(
