I got this piece off of a guy local. He told me he picked it up from a lake close by.
He also said he had it in an aquarium a few years ago. I dunno.

I believed him at first, which is why I bought it. But when I got it home and started to clean it, I noticed that there was still soft wood on the inside of a bend in the trunk.

I have attached a few pics of the driftwood.

Does anyone know what kind of wood it is and if its o.k. for a fish tank?

Also, will the soft wood be a problem down the road?

Thanks.

It looks like some sort of pine (but I'm not certain)...and if it is a soft wood I would not keep it in the aquarium. Soft woods will rot quickly in the water. If you can make a mark in the wood with your fingernail then don't keep it in the tank.

I have some pieces that look like yours and have not had any problems. I always get rid of the soft wood. I sandblast it but a pressure washer works to
