Can you patch a 2" diameter hole in a glass tank with plexiglass/acrylic?

Just like the title says. I am building a sump out of a 30g ex-fish store tank. it has about a 2" diameter drilled hole in the upper left corner. I've looked into patching it with 1/4" thick glass and it's about 30 bucks. I did find some 5mm thick 4x4 glass squares online for really cheap. Will that work? If not will plexi and silicone do the job?

Thanks in advance!

yes and yes. Glass is preferred, but either will work. And if it's a sump, the hole in the upper left should be rarely touching water.

bulkhead.

this is my first DIY sump and or marine tank. I'm under the impression that if my pump fails then the water level in what will be the first sump chamber (with my skimmer/sock in it) will rise the most. If that happens I want the hole patched.

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a bulkhead that would seal well enough. Should I just measure and then find something close and seal it with silicone?

lol bulkheads are THE #1 choice for this. what do you think tank manufacturers use for drilled tanks with overflows, etc? patching is ghetto, messy, and prone to leaking. do it the right way and use a bulkhead

1.5" bulkheads take a 2 3/8" hole
1" bulkheads take a 1 3/4" hole

a 3"x3" piece of 1/4" glass cant cost more than $5 from a glass shop. i would rather use a bulkhead though.
