can you sex discus

is there anyway that you can sex discus. Venting? or just looking at them?

They have to be adults and you have to have bred a lot of them and then you will be about 80% right on sexing, otherwise get 6 and let them figure it out. Ken

Hi. I agree with Ken... unless you vent them or see them spawning they are very difficult to sex even for those with years of experience with discus. Sue

what about the geometric way where the top or bottom fin touches the tail if you draw an imaginary line through it. if it touches the tail than male if not female.

In past experience it has failed me. Besides u would have to take the fish out of the water for an accurate measure.

OK thank you. I had a breeding pair but the male was to ugly so I put a better looking one in with the female and I'm just not to sure its a male. butt it behavior was that of a male in the other tank.

Better to put the female in with a group and let her pick her own mate. You can't tell male or female behavior. I've had females that were alpha in a group of a dozen.

Get about six to eight discus, turn the lights down, some candles, and Barry White. Watch carefully which to get it on.

This is a relative thing, but the head looks different on males than on females...
