Hi All,

A friend asked me to post this on the forum since he was having trouble posting pictures. He is a member here. Can anyone help him sex this JD?

Thanks in advance!

I would say it's a male.
No blue beard. Has a more elongated body vs egg shape like females are.
Here a female to compare the differences.

See the blue metallic area under her eye, sweeping back to the gill covers. This is a female only trait.

Sorry Jexnell Jexnell i have to disagree, I am thinking female bc there is a slight beard..

This might be a fish worth venting for a positive sex ID.

if it does turn out to be a female then you have a hell of a nice female!

Hey guys this is actually my JD. My buddy posted it because it wouldn’t let me for some reason. I’m trying to sex so I can try to pair it up.

Male. Thats not really a beard like females have. A female will have that whole lower area smeared with blue as if paint was wiped all over the lower section of the jaw almost to the eye. The beard will also go behind the eye and farther up the gill plate. Females also lack the speckles on the whole body like a male has. This fish has defined spots in the areas a female would have streaks or smeared blue patterns and a full spangled body.
There can be exceptions to the normal features but this one looks male.

I hate to say this, but I think it’s female. Every male I’ve ever had has no worming on its lower cheek.
Not my pictures or my fish but these males show signs of slight worming and/or spangling on their jaws/chins/cheeks whatever you like to call it... females dont get a full body of spangling and the beards are much more prinounced (males in pics are on left side.. females on right)

Maybe a random spot on the cheek, but no worming. I’m not positive, couldn’t say 100% either, but if you held a gun to my head, I’d say female. I’ll stick with my guess.

Look at the pics of the fish in question. The “beard” stops at the front edge of his eye on the bottom of his chin. From that point back his whole lower half of his gill plate is colorless. The other pics with confirmed males all have the same goatee and empty lower half of the gill plate after the goatee. Yes I am gonna call it a goatee cause its not a beard?. Then look at the female pics. They all have the heavy coloring on the full length of the jaw and the lower half of the gill plate. Google male JD and look at more pics. Its very common to have a goatee on the first part of the jaw of males. If the op needs more positive than that I say vent it.
