A friend was having his floors refinished and the contractor used a stripping agent to remove the old finish, creating some very toxic fumes. My friend was warned to remove all pets for at least 12 hours while the work was being done. We were not able to move all his fish out, so we simply covered all the tanks with tightly fitting poly sheeting, sold for use as painting drop cloths. This was taped all the way around, and an airline ran into each tank, fed from an airpump running outside the house. Outdoor temps at the time were probably around 20F. At the end of the 12 hours, all the tanks showed significant temp drops, between 5 and 15 degrees lower than normal. In hindsight, we should also have raised the temperature in the fishroom to help compensate, but we didn't think of it at the time.
So cooling a tank is definitely possible using enough cold air, but it's difficult to see how this could be accurately controlled. Interestingly, there were no deaths or subsequent illnesses among the fish.
