Can you.....

Yes you can but I wouldnt advise it. You would need to keep all but the biggest motor turned off but depending on how long it takes for the water to travel through, you might find all the dissolved oxygen will be gone so the bio- filtration is not working which can be dangerous. Since the only other advantage would be mecanical filtration, again there is no real benefit since a properly packed single canister will remove particulate matter efficiently. You would be far better off to run your canisters seperately.

Filter motors are hard to damage. There is a coil embeded in resin (VERY hard to damage) and a magnetic impeller that spins around inside the coil. As long as you don't run it dry (and melt stuff or cause heat stress), or run it with sand, you should be fine. The slower impellers will RESTRICT the flow on your ganged filters, and the smaller tubing usually associated with those smaller pumps will also restrict the flow... and the additional filter media will restrict the flow... and why exactly do you want to do this again? There is no advantage to be gained by it from an water quality perspective.

I assume you are trying to hide hoses? Paint the back of your tank, and then you won't see them as easily.

Also, you'll have one intake and one return. The tank would be much better off with more than one of each if you're running mutliple canisters.

I dont, its a guy on a forum I run has ganaged a 205 and 305, the 205 is the filter before the 305, ive posted my reservation about ganging 2 different sized filters together like this but he doesnt believe me, neither did another poster. The 205 flows 110gph and the 305 185gph, im worried that the shortfall will mean that the 305 is now having to work a heck of a lot harder. I have only ever ganged 2 filters once before and it was 2 2128's together.
